Grass Wood Lane, Grassington
This rural exception site on the edge of Grassington within the Yorkshire Dales National Park required a simple design response utilising natural stone and slate typical of the local vernacular.
Working closely with the National Park planners, a massing of 2 short non symmetrical terraces was adopted. We were able to maintain a dry stone boundary wall to the highway, thereby reducing the points of entry. A footpath serving the individual houses runs behind the stone wall and is therefore hidden from the highway.
In adopting a simple design approach, the quality of detailing and materials was crucial to the overall success. Natural stone walling with stone window surrounds play an important role whilst a single storey entrance lobby, typical of the local vernacular, provides access to the first floor apartment.
